Modern Commentary
Yep! The lounge guys. Three guys who hang out in the apartment's lounge, watching static on a TV and seeing different things. Way back in the day when TV static was a thing and you'd kinda get a picture instead of just a message that says "check signal cable" or something.
There was a manga I was reading at the time, Living Game. Raizo Fuwa works for a medium-sized company. He just got a new apartment; it's small, but it's a decent size for a bachelor. His company's office building is damaged in an earthquake and condemned; for Manga Reasons they move the entire company's operations into his tiny apartment. Also, the boss's family friend - a young girl - gets hired on and can't get her own apartment so she moves in with him, also for Manga Reasons. Now that I write that out, the parallels are rather obvious. I will say that Isabel wrote the first chapter and she hadn't read this.
Anyhow, the lounge guys were inspired by Raizo's coworkers, who stood in the background and offered unhelpful advice regarding the new precarious living situation.
Bryan Lee O'Malley, of Scott Pilgrim fame, has spoken positively of it, so it's good that it's not entirely forgotten. Looking over my twitter and news and commentary, I could've sworn I've mentioned Living Game a lot. Turns out, just twice in passing on Twitter. Huh. It's one of those things where, given the constant firehose of social media, for people to notice that you're a fan of a thing, you need to never shut up about it. That's hard for a manga that ended 30 years ago; there hasn't been anything new about it since. No anime. No fanart that I've seen. Just a few people quietly appreciate it - myself included. - Terrence
