Original Commentary
There is this Bra shop around here called "The Wizard of Bras" that I knew about, even before I really knew what a bra was. This was a bit of a nod to them.
Modern Commentary
The secret isn't never getting mad. The secret is not staying mad. Generally speaking. Exceptions apply, etc.
Unrelatedly, one of the things we go back and forth about is brand names and when to use them. There's times when you want to make it clear that we're not affiliated with, endorsed by, or really talking about a nationally-known brand. And there's time when you want to quickly and cleanly communicate that the characters are talking about Wendys or Facebook or The Late Show without making things complicated and hoping the audience guesses correctly.
We color Kevin and Kell, which has Beige University which is based on Auburn University.
For the first few comics, I was instead looking at the landmarks of Brown University and wondering why I couldn't match anything up.
One of the additional complications about fake brand names is that a lot of other people use them and we want to make sure that ours are either generic enough that nobody can claim them or unique enough that it's just ours.
We're a bit nervous about having our characters, to choose a random example, drink Hepsi Cola then it turns out that, without us knowing, someone else used that first. Then we're afraid that folks will say we're ripping off that other game or comic or book or such when we just arrived at the same moderately-obvious place by coincidence.
Wizard of Bras is a good, clever name. It's a real shop and if we had used it that way, it would've seemed like we were trying to take credit for that cleverness. - Terrence
